The flavor of our red pepper speckled Smoky Chipotle Black Beans and Rice might remind you of a spicy burrito. That is because it features typical southwestern seasonings like garlic, cumin, and hot chipotle peppers. The word chipotle comes from Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs who lived in what is now Mexico. It means smoked chile. Ours are smoked jalapenos which give a distinctive spicy kick!
Fantastic and satisfying as-is or mixed with tomato, avocado, radish or shredded cabbage. It pairs well with any kind of Mexican food or ingredients. Our Curried Turmeric Lentils and Rice was inspired by the legendary curries of India. It is a colorful blend of brown lentils, red bell peppers, green flecks of spinach and distinctive bright yellow rice colored by turmeric. Historically used in Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric has been studied extensively for its health benefits such as improving memory, arthritis, depression and reducing inflammation, among other things.
In addition to turmeric, our Curried Turmeric Lentils and rice features a complex blend of several spices, onion, garlic, and a slight zip of crushed red pepper. It is excellent accented with fruits such as raisins, dried mango or chopped apple. Or try adding some cashews, cilantro, unsweetened yogurt, or roasted cauliflower. Did you know cowboys in the old west really did eat beans? That’s because beans were readily available and easy to carry. Needless to say, out on the range, beans were prepared different ways, sometimes with chilies added for spice, or molasses for a bit of sweetness. Our Cowboy BBQ Pinto Beans and Rice are lightly sweetened with dried apples, but no added sugar. Like every good BBQ, they also include tomato and familiar ketchup and mustard type spices. The flavor is similar to traditional slow cooked baked beans.
Kids especially enjoy our Cowboy Pinto Beans and Rice because of the slight sweetness and mild spice. The light apple sweetness also blends nicely with bitter greens. Try with sauteed chard, kale, cabbage, collards, or bok choy.

MILD & CREAMY RED BEANS AND RICE
You have probably heard of Red Beans and Rice as a traditional Monday night dinner in New Orleans. But the combination is so delicious, variations are also enjoyed around the world!
Our Mild and Creamy Red Beans and Rice is the ultimate comfort food. You may even start to think of it as the “macaroni and cheese of beans and rice”(without the cheese that is)! It’s made with a combination of mashed and whole beans which gives a smooth, creamy texture that is very soothing. It gets creamier the more you stir.
We left out the spicy peppers (and meat of course!) so you can jazz it up as you like. Mildly seasoned with the savory “holy trinity” vegetables of onion, green bell pepper and celery, this is a favorite with kids and anyone trying to avoid hot spices. Yet it makes the perfect base for whatever goodies you want to add. Try: fried banana, avocado, grilled veggies, salsa, cheese, or a splash of vinegar.
