Like everyone, we were horrified to see the fires racing through Los Angeles, and wanted to do something to help. Through an organization called Mutual Aid LA Network, I discovered Pasadena Community Job Center. It matches day laborers with homeowners, construction companies, landscapers, and anyone else needing temporary help. Since the fires, they have become a hub for LA fire relief. We were happy to be able to send them over 100 Yumbini meals.
Pasadena Community Job Center formed “fire brigades” of their laborers to clean up refuse left by the fires and wind storm from streets and sidewalks. Many of the workers lost their own homes in the fires, or lost employment in homes that burned. But they were still serving their community. The organization posted daily requests for donations of water, food, first aid supplies, toilet paper, hygiene supplies as well as volunteers to help with distribution and clean up. They are a very energetic and lively group! You can follow their activities on Instagram @pasadenajobcenter.
Since the clean up began, they have recruited thousands of volunteers. The aid distribution station got so big they needed to move it across the street to the Kaiser building for more space. Pasadena Community Job Center has also become a World Central Kitchen distribution site for LA fire relief. We think Yumbini is in pretty good company of dedicated, hard working people. I’m happy we are able to help in some small way.
