Our Yumbini instructions include a little “about 3 min.” symbol and say to “microwave on high until boiling rapidly”. Good news! Your Yumbini might be ready sooner than that! I developed the “about 3 minute” guidance based on our home microwave. We recently had some electrical work done on our house, and now, in the same microwave, the Yumbini is boiling rapidly after 2.5 minutes!
I’m not sure what that story tells you about the state of the electrical system in our 120-year-old house, but it is not the only time this has happened. We noticed the reverse effect when cooking Yumbini at events. If the microwave is powered by a generator with several users, the microwave is very slow, and we have to cook Yumbini longer. But when we use industrial microwaves in the commercial kitchens we visit, Yumbini comes to a boil in under 2 minutes!
All this to say, LET THE BUBBLES be your guide! The key is to BRING YUMBINI TO A BOIL. It doesn’t really matter how – fast microwave, slow microwave, stovetop, campfire, or barbecue. When bubbles are coming up and breaking on the surface all over the Yumbini, you can turn off the heat.
Last thing: I know it is excruciating, but DON’T FORGET TO WAIT 3 MINUTES after boiling. The beans and rice need time to soak up the water. And you don’t want to burn your mouth! So bring your Yumbini to a full boil, wait 3 minutes, and enjoy the tasty goodness of beans and rice!
