Yumbini is Three Years Old and Ready to Roar!

Yumbini just turned three! No longer a baby, but a walking, talking toddler! (Well, Aki and I are clearly not toddlers! But the company is three years old – old enough to really go places!)

Our first sale of Yumbini was on April 9, 2022 to my good friend Lisa. We started with only three flavors. Since that humble start, we quickly set up online sales and launched Mild & Creamy Red Beans and Rice. In addition to online, Yumbini is now sold in about 50 brick and mortar stores in the greater Bay Area (including Napa, Davis and Sacramento). We also sell on the outdoor supply website Garage Grown Gear. And most recently, as of last month, consumers can buy Yumbini online at Walmart.com!

After a couple changes, we’ve found a great manufacturing partner who is efficient, helpful AND responsive. They are a California, family-owned business and we just love working with them. We are now making and selling at least three times more Yumbini than when we first started out. (Okay, its true, 3X is not explosive growth. But we are a self-funded mom and pop operation!)

Last year, Yumbini joined the Beans is How “Bean Coaltion“. Beans is How is an international organization striving to improve human and planetary health by doubling the consumption of beans worldwide by 2028. As a group, we are working to create long term behavior change to make beans visible, desireable and available. Beans is How promotes the inclusion of beans in dietary guidelines, restaurants, hospitals, school lunches, and other healthful products.

Over the past three years, I’ve created a collection of almost 50 unique Yumbini recipes. Even though the best Yumbini meal often comes from opening the fridge (or cupboard or backpack) and adding whatever you have available, check out our recipe page! There are even some “fancy” meals in there – good enough for guests!

And for those of you who ask me about food fads and what you should eat, please check out our blog page. I try to cut though all the internet hype and explain things like taking care of your microbiome, how you really do think with your gut, and maintaining “cardiometabolic health“. Answering questions like: is gluten-free better, are carbs good or bad, what is healthy, how much protein do you need, and is it okay to use a salt shaker, I’ve written about everything from food regulations to tara flour.

I also address ultra processed foods, obesity, and blood sugar spikes. And I provide lots of tips for camping/backpacking, following a whole food plant-based diet, as well as helping kids make Yumbini without burning themselves! And more. I hope you will check it out!

Instagram too. If you don’t follow us already, take a look @eatyumbini.

Finally, thank YOU for making our first three years a success! A business is nothing without customers. And it makes me so happy when I meet people who are helped by having Yumbini in their lives. I’m still convinced that the more people eat Yumbini, the better our world will be. We love having you along on this journey!
